Enkhuizen is a city with a rich history. Within the old city walls, you’ll find 361 national monuments, each with its own unique and fascinating story. Take a closer look at Enkhuizen and experience the impressive history of a VOC city with charm on every corner.

The Drommedaris (1540)

As part of the city wall, the Drommedaris served as a city gate and defense tower, guarding the harbors and overlooking the former Zuiderzee. Over the centuries, the building has served as a prison, storage space, telegraph and post office, café, youth hostel, and today as a cultural center.

Snouck van Loosenhuis (1742)

In her will, Margaretha Snouck van Loosen specified that her house should be set up for unmarried women or widows ‘of respectable standing.’ Since the opening of the ladies’ house in 1893, time has stood almost still here. The Snouck van Loosenhuis is open to the public only during Heritage Open Days.

The West Frisian Mint (1611)
At Westerstraat 125 stands the Mint, the building where VOC coins were struck. This was alternately done in Enkhuizen, Hoorn, or Medemblik. The beautiful facade has remained almost intact. Today, a women’s clothing store occupies this historic building.

Waaggebouw (1559)
This building represents an example of early Renaissance architecture in the northern Netherlands. The original weighing mechanism of the weigh house has been preserved. The Waaggebouw is open to the public only during Heritage Open Days.

Town Hall (1688)
A symbol of the great, prosperous city Enkhuizen was during the Golden Age. The interior remains largely authentic, featuring rich decorative paintings. The offices are still in use today, and the historic Schepenenkamer is a popular wedding venue. The Blauwe Zaal of the Town Hall regularly hosts exhibitions. Other rooms are still used as offices and are not open to the public.

City Prison (1612)
The unusual tall, narrow building, made entirely of brick and built on a rectangular plan, has been preserved almost entirely in the state in which it was built. Old torture devices can still be found inside the prison.

The Librije (16th Century)
The Netherlands only has one 17th-century city library that has been preserved in its original location, and that is the Librije of Enkhuizen. This historic public library has retained its unique character. The Librije is part of the Westerkerk.
