Drommedaris
The Drommedaris, or Ketenpoort, was built in 1540 as a city gate, part of the city wall that surrounded Enkhuizen at the time. It was also a defense tower that watched over the city’s harbors and had a view of the then Zuiderzee.
On the southeast side of the building hang two anchors that commemorate an attempt by the Geldersen to take the city in the sixteenth century. However, they were noticed and chased away, and in their haste to get away they cut the anchors. The Enkhuizeners retrieved the anchors from the water and brought them triumphantly into the city.
For a long time the building served as a prison and storage space. From fortress tower, prison, telephone and telegraph office to vibrant Cultural Centre, for centuries a role in the life of the Enkhuizen residents has been recorded for the Drom. Now ‘De Drom’ is a cultural centre that offers activities such as singing, dancing and music to lectures, cabaret, theatre and film.
