In the middle of the May holidays, on Friday, May 1, 2026, Enkhuizen’s city center will be transformed into a city teeming with science. Every year, around 6,000 children aged 4 to 12, accompanied by their parents or guardians, attend Expedition NEXT, the national science festival. Here, children can ask scientists from all over the Netherlands a thousand and one questions, attend mini-lectures, conduct their own research, view the latest inventions, and try everything out for themselves.
The entire adventure is guided by seven cheerful fantasy characters: Professor Nova Next, Sim Megabyte, Hannah Klaver, Sneek Stronk, Doctor Kyona, Zelp, and Dexter Drop. Together, they take children on a journey of discovery through the world of science and technology.
Go on an expedition and help Professor Nova Next
Professor Nova Next comes to Enkhuizen especially from the future. In the future, all knowledge will be lost, and she needs the children’s help to fill the Science Treasure: an empty treasure chest that will be filled with good ideas and creativity, so that the world will still be a wonderful place to live in a hundred years from now. During the expeditions, children will conduct research, perform experiments, and ask questions to fill the Science Treasure. More information about the expeditions can be found at www.expeditienext.nl/expedities .
An impression of previous editions in Roermond, Zutphen, Middelburg and Franeker can be viewed at www.expeditienext.nl/impressie .
About Expedition NEXT
The festival is organized by the National Science Agenda (NWA), which makes science accessible to everyone. Expedition NEXT sparks curiosity, lets children discover how science works, and helps them distinguish fact from fiction. Collaboration with scientists, schools, knowledge institutes, universities, and cultural organizations is central to bringing science and society closer together.
