Weeshuis

The orphanage is located in the Westerstraat. The outbuilding looks old, but the facade is a copy. Materials from the old facade, which used to be located directly on Westerstraat, have been used. Built in 1906, the building still contains gold leather wallpaper from 1742, mantelpieces in Louis XV style decorated by Pieter de Nicolo in 1738 and copper crowns and portraits of men and women from the 16th and 17th centuries. That all comes from the former orphanage. The old facade had great artistic value: it was made of brick and natural stone and had a richly decorated portico. The gable had graceful claws and ornaments. A gable stone indicated the year 1616, including a relief depicting a typical orphan school where the orphaned father teaches.
