Waaggebouw

The Waaggebouw in Enkhuizen shows an image of the early Renaissance in the northern Netherlands. Even the original weighing mechanism of the weighing hall has been preserved. From 1636 onwards, the surgeon’s room was located on the upper floor, also a meeting room and lecture hall for the surgeons’ guild. The stained glass windows of this room show the names in the coats of arms of the surgeons and doctors who worked in Enkhuizen between 1639 and 1654.

Surgeon’s Room The stained glass windows of this room feature the names and coats of arms of the surgeons and doctors who worked in Enkhuizen between 1639 and 1654. The atmosphere of learning evoked by these elements is further enhanced by the oak lectern that stands against one of the walls. A door next to the lectern gives access to the sweat box, a small room measuring 2 by 2.5 metres where exam candidates would have awaited their examination.

The wooden walls here are partly decorated with pilasters and false doors and partly painted with arabesques, birds and tulips. Vereniging Oud Enkhuizen is located in the Waag building.
