Visit the open-air museum between 13 December 2024 and 5 January 2025 for the new edition of Zuiderzeelicht . Stroll through the atmospherically lit streets in the evening and let yourself be carried away by an exciting story about friendship, love and a devastating storm. Presenter Huub Stapel takes you back in time to the former Zuiderzee island of Schokland. Here the residents, mainly fishermen, had to live together with the water day after day. Through light, image and sound, the story about a fisherman’s son from Emmeloord comes to life bit by bit in De schelp van Schokland . Come and marvel in the dark!
The shell of Schokland
Schokland, now located in the Noordoostpolder, used to be a low-lying island in the Zuiderzee, barely more than five kilometres long and a few hundred metres wide. The inhabitants lived mainly from, but also with, the Zuiderzee. There was a constant risk of flooding and there was a lot of poverty. During Zuiderzeelicht, get to know Reijer Klappe, a fisherman’s son from Emmeloord, the poorest part of Schokland, and his girlfriend Marrijtje from the Middelbuurt, the richer part of Schokland, in eight scenes. Discover how their friendship overcomes differences in origin, religion and adversity.
