Open Monument Day in the Zuiderzee Museum

  • Saturday 14 September, 11:00 – 16:30 hour
  • Sunday 15 September, 11:00 – 16:30 hour

Free tour of Peperhuis and rainwater

On Saturday 14 or Sunday 15 September, as part of Open Monument Day, take a free guided tour of the special architecture and construction details of the Peperhuis. The facades of this monumental building include a special rainwater collection and drainage system. Valuable rainwater was collected for storage; something that was of the utmost importance before the arrival of the water mains. A little further on, in the courtyard, there is a cellar complex dating from the 18th century, in which rainwater was stored. Take a closer look at the concealed entrance to this water cellar!

Waterwise

In both the outdoor museum and the indoor museum, this year there is special attention for the use of drinking water. We are now used to always having clean drinking water available, but in the past it did not just come from the tap. The cleanest water was rainwater and all kinds of ways were already devised to collect and store this water, such as in rain barrels and large water cellars. If you want to visit the entire museum on Open Monument Day, buy a ticket via the website.

Practical information

The tours start on September 14 and 15 between 11:00 and 16:30 every half hour and last 45 minutes. Participation in the tour is free, even if you do not visit the rest of the museum, and advance registration is not required. There is room for a maximum of 20 people per tour and the tour is wheelchair accessible.
