Creole Clarinets

  • 17 November 2024
    • 14:00 – 17:00

The core of the Creole Clarinets consists of Thomas L’Etienne and Uli Wunner. Despite their geographical extremes, Hamburg versus Munich, they have been good musical friends for over 40 years. Audiences and critics refer to them as “the twins” and the press calls their interplay “telepathic”.

Thomas and Uli play both clarinet and saxophone (tenor and alto, respectively). Their playing is strongly influenced by the Creole school of New Orleans. Frequent and long trips to the city on the Mississippi (New Orleans was Thomas l’Etienne’s second home for almost 20 years), have brought them into close personal and artistic contact with the current New Orleans music scene.

The music of the Crescent City is an integrated part of their repertoire. About 10 years ago, both were also captivated by the Martinique pieces and by the traditional Brazilian Choros. The Choro music is also called the “New Orleans jazz of Brazil”. Thomas lives in Rio de Janeiro for 3 months a year. In the meantime, they have recorded several CDs with this music, including recordings made in Brazil with local musicians. The creative diversity of the music, the virtuosity of their playing and the very humorous announcements make the ‘Creole Clarinets’ a much sought-after band at major Jazz festivals throughout Europe.
